margin-right: 15px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.connecttherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/working_together.jpg\" width=\"223\" height=\"223\" \/>Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Eph-4-26\" id=\"en-NIV-29299\">\u201cIn your anger do not sin\u201d:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Eph-4-27\" id=\"en-NIV-29300\">and do not give the devil a foothold.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Eph-4-28\" id=\"en-NIV-29301\">Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.<\/span> <span class=\"text Eph-4-29\" id=\"en-NIV-29302\">Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>but only what is helpful for building others up<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Eph-4-30\" id=\"en-NIV-29303\"><sup class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-size: 0.75em; line-height: normal; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;\">\u00a0<\/sup>And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>with whom you were sealed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>for the day of redemption.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Eph-4-31\" id=\"en-NIV-29304\">Get rid of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.<\/span> <span class=\"text Eph-4-32\" id=\"en-NIV-29305\">Be kind and compassionate to one another,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I love this passage.\u00a0 Seven key instructions based on the body metaphor Paul outlines in 4:16.\u00a0 Things we put off and put on as we seek unity with others and maturity collectively as the body of Christ.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Honest and open communication (Vs 25)<br \/>\nAs brothers and sisters serving together as members of one body we are called to put aside pretense, false talk and actions and to be truthful, honest and open with each other.\u00a0 Clear honest communication is the basis of all healthy relationships.<\/li>\n<li>Assertive and responsible management of emotions (Vs 26-27)<br \/>\nToday we would call this emotional intelligence, understanding what is happening within us responsibly managing it.\u00a0 This means neither allowing anger to drive us to an outburst, or repressing it into resentment, but responsibly owning it ourselves and communicating it to others carefully.<\/li>\n<li>Industry and generosity (Vs 28)<br \/>\nWe live in a time where people often have a sense of entitlement.\u00a0 Paul insists people need to work not only for their own good but so that they may be able to be generous and caring toward others.<\/li>\n<li>Encouragement (Vs 29)<br \/>\nThere is a need for intentionality around our speech.\u00a0 We are not be careless with words, but to think about the needs of others and to build them up intentionally.\u00a0 Paul indicates this has a flow on effect, people who listen to these interactions benefit as well.<\/li>\n<li>Heart responsiveness (Vs 30)<br \/>\nWe are invited here to be open and responsive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, to act, to speak, to pray and to respond the way God seeks to guide us.\u00a0 We are not to resist the prompting of the spirit but to be active in responding.<\/li>\n<li>Active dismissal of evil (Vs 31)<br \/>\nWe have already be alerted in Vs 26-27 to the ease of which bitterness and malice take root.\u00a0 We are instructed here not to nurse evil or let it settle within us but to actively get rid of it.\u00a0 Gracious kindness to and forgiveness of others (Vs 32)<\/li>\n<li>We replace self centred evil with allowing God&#8217;s grace to flow through us in kindness, compassion and forgiveness.\u00a0 The word for forgiveness here is related to grace.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So we end up with 7 movements that allow us to work effectively together:<\/p>\n<p>From pretence to open communication<\/p>\n<p>From lack of emotional management to responsible disclosure<\/p>\n<p>From a sense of entitlement to industry and generosity<\/p>\n<p>From careless criticism to intentional encourgament<\/p>\n<p>From inner resistance to spiritual responsiveness<\/p>\n<p>From holding on to actively displacing evil<\/p>\n<p>From self-centred to a grace-centred relationship with others<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ephesians 4:25-32 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully\u00a0to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body.\u00a0\u201cIn your anger do not sin\u201d:\u00a0Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,\u00a0and do &#8230;
